71. THE CHURCH OF THE ST ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, in Stimlje

The Church of the St Archangel Michael, on a hill above Stimlje, was built between 1920-1922 on the foundations of an older church. It was dedicated to Serbia's World War I warriors. The church was built by the "Knjeginja Ljubica" (Princess Ljubica) association to the designs of Serbia's first female architect, Jelisaveta Nacic. The artist Uros Predic painted the frescoes of St Sava and Stevan Nemanja. Next to the church was an orphanage for girls. The church was thoroughly renovated in 1977.

The church was desecrated and set on fire while the frescoes were destroyed. All this occured in the presence of the British KFOR troops.
